ten photobooks from 2014

It is that time of year again. Here are ten photobooks that I have in some way found to be interesting, unusual and inspirational. There are many other great photobooks that are not included here. There are even some photobooks from 2014 that I have not even seen yet. But these are ten photobooks I like and I share them with you.

Tranquility – Heikki Kaski
[Lecturis. Amsterdam, 2014]
Heikki Kaski (Finland) discovers the locals (800 inhabitants) and also the extreme heat in the small American town of Tranquility. What is Tranquility? Where is Tranquility? Why? How? Tranquility is located in the San Joaquin Valley, California and is essentially in the middle of nowhere. Heikki explores the empty-lots, the run-down buildings, the gnarled trees, the wide landscapes with birds flying overhead and to a lesser extent the shy and retiring natives. 銀座は再開発ラッシュなのかな。

クラインのプリントはかっこよかった。大道さんの地平線のシリーズはやっぱ好み。フロントガラスの雨粒はずっと見ていられる。「何かへの旅1970-1874」か「オンザロード」は持っておこうかな。喜久治さんの復刻版「地図」はいいお値段すぎて手が出ない。

２枚組は微差と類似。

今一番気になっているのが２枚組の写真。

比較的組みやすい３枚ではなくて、２枚組が気になる。

おそらくは微差と類似のバランス。

これから探求したいテーマの一つになりそう。

Today, one month before the first day of Christmas, I decided to make a selection of thirteen author/photographer books and one exhibition catalogue to represent the high quality of photobooks issued in the highly productive calendar year 2014. What is remarkable is that, except for the children book and the photo magazine for kids, all covers are extremely sober, some sheer gloomy. And one way or the other all of the bookworks deal with history and hierarchies, political issues, both local and global, with gender and everyday life, with surveillance and leisure. I will mention the publications in no particular order.

創造の現場

ベンジャミン・リー氏のブローニーのベタ焼きを使ったポートレートが好きで、毎号楽しみにしていた。連載が終わって単行本化されていた。読み逃している回が結構あったので、これから少しずつ読んでいこう。

雑誌では気づかなかったけど、ベタの黒フチを見ると、プレストやアクロス、トライXのフィルムを使っているのがわかる。初期の数人はプレストで、その後７割はトライXだ。間に２、３人アクロスが混じっていた。プレストは生産終了している。

こういう味のあるレイアウトはとても好みで、単純にシンプルでも無く、懲りすぎても無い。誌面の美しさと、インタビュー記事としての質の高さが相まって、とてもバランスが良い好企画だと思う。
